MAZYAR KOOLAIAN

I am an internationally trained doctor with over five years of clinical experience across the NHS in the United Kingdom and general practice environments. I have worked in a range of acute and primary care settings, including Emergency Medicine, General Practice, Acute Medical Unit, and urgent care, giving me strong diagnostic, procedural, and decision-making skills.

My emergency medicine experience includes managing acute presentations such as PE, pericarditis, asthma and COPD exacerbations, cardiac events, stroke/TIA, drug overdose, and cauda equina suspicion. I am competent in essential ED procedures including venepuncture, IV cannulation, urinary catheterisation, suturing, and initial stabilisation of critically unwell patients.

In General Practice, I have completed almost two years of UK GP specialty training, gaining experience in chronic disease management, elderly care, women’s health, paediatrics, mental health, and continuity of care. I have worked in care homes and community settings and have strong communication skills developed through regular patient consultations, safety-netting, and multidisciplinary teamwork.

Across all roles, I demonstrate excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage competing clinical priorities, commitment to patient safety, and ongoing professional development. I bring a strong understanding of UK healthcare standards and am motivated to contribute to high-quality, patient-centred care in the New Zealand health system.

 completed my primary medical qualification overseas and subsequently passed PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, obtaining full GMC registration with licence to practise in the UK. I undertook UK GP Specialty Training, completing almost two years of structured training across general practice and hospital rotations, including Emergency Medicine and Acute Medicine.

During this period, I successfully passed the AKT (Applied Knowledge Test), demonstrating strong clinical knowledge across primary care, acute presentations, and evidence-based practice. Although I exited GP training before completion, I gained substantial supervised experience in both community and hospital settings, further enhancing my clinical capability and decision-making skills.

I have continued ongoing professional development through supervisor-led teaching, exam preparation, audits, and quality-improvement activities.
