He angitūtanga:
The opportunity

Auckland's coast, rivers, streams, lakes and groundwater are an important part of what Aucklanders value in our region.

Water quality and quantity are both significant issues that will escalate as the population grows and the impacts of climate change become increasingly apparent.

We have a fantastic permanent opportunity for an experienced hydrogeologist to join Auckland Council's Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU).

You will oversee and develop monitoring and investigation programmes primarily related to shallow groundwater systems to inform council activities that relate to extreme event resilience, natural hazards and climate change adaptation.

On any given day, you would:

  • review monitoring programmes and prioritise monitoring activities
- build models
- conduct field hydrogeological investigations/inspections, including data collection, water quality sampling, analysis, and interpretation
- prepare, review and present scientific/technical reports to a wide range of audiences including councillors and local boards
- procure and manage professional services
- guide and support technical work in water resource management

Your work will help provide the key evidence base to support strategy and policy decisions to improve environmental and operational outcomes, ultimately helping Auckland be more resilient from the effects on climate change and natural hazards.

He kōrero mōu:
About you

We are looking for a driven individual who has the ability to extract the story from hydrological data, and can use that knowledge to produce trusted advice that supports council's decisions and actions regarding resilience, climate adaptation, and water resources.

Having completed a post graduate degree or equivalent qualification, ideally in hydrogeology or geotechnical engineering, you can demonstrate your in-depth understanding of hydrological sciences to the emerging issues in natural hazards, extreme events and water resources.

You have the ability to provide robust analysis, excellent reporting and technical review across a range of hydrogeological topics relating to shallow groundwater systems, and can communicate complex information effectively to a range of audiences.

We will value your excellent collaboration and inter-personal skills, as you will be working with council-wide teams to better inform decision makers and activities in our region.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou:
What we offer

Joining RIMU is great for your career and professional profile as you will continue to develop strong networks across the council group and the environmental sector.

You will enjoy being part of a diverse team of brilliant scientists, researchers, analysts and specialists who work flexibly and who have a passion for making a positive impact on Auckland's future.

See Knowledge Auckland for RIMU's published research, information and analysis about Auckland's communities, economy and environment.

This role is deemed safety sensitive and in line with Auckland Council policy, you will be required to complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

A full driver's license is a requirement.
