Johnson Controls' Fire Detection R&D group is located in Christchurch, and

develops Fire Alarm, Evacuation System and Alarm Monitoring equipment for the Australian and New Zealand markets. We work alongside our Sales, Product Management and Technical Services teams to provide well respected products and customer support.

As part of the Johnson Controls Global Products division, we liaise with local and global R&D groups and manufacturing plants to deliver quality products to our customers.

**Role Overview

To develop, test and deliver software and firmware to support our products to enable Johnson Controls to remain competitive in the fire and evacuation equipment markets.


  • Project Management plan and execute projects within cost and timescale, using the Company project management processes.
  • Delight customers by designing, developing and supporting software and firmware, along with user manuals, drawings, procedures and other design outputs.
  • Determine and confirm the best solutions by building prototypes and final software / firmware and verifying these against product specifications and product standards.
  • Ensure that specific project quality objectives are met and that the requirements of the company quality system are complied with.
  • Improve our business operation using Agile methods, cybersecurity designs, and best practice management tools.
**How you will do it

  • Assist with creation of product designs and project plans.
  • Develop software to specification, for concept or final design, as part of a team project or as an individual project.
  • Collaborate with the Christchurch team to continuously improve our Agile and software development operation.
  • Support the production team(s) for manufacture of JCI product, including supply of the firmware, provision and support of test software, diagnosing manufacturing issues occurring during New Product Introduction or normal production.
  • Support the Technical Support team, with field issues reported by customers. Assist to diagnose the problem in the field, set up equivalent systems in house for testing, and provide resolutions.

Who are we looking for?

  • Bachelor of Software Engineering, Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Science, or relevant higher University Qualification.
  • 510 years firmware design experience: using C, C++, embedded Linux or other RTOS; Agile development processes.
  • New Zealand residency/citizenship or a valid New Zealand work visa.
  • Excellent communication skills with a cando attitude.
  • Experience in designing to and testing against international product standards is desirable.
  • Experience in designing cybersecurity into software and systems is desirable.
