    Description

Manulife Investment Management provides investment management services with a focus on timberland and agricultural assets across Australia and New Zealand. In New Zealand, Manulife Investment Management Forest Management oversees more than 210,000 hectares of timberland estates. The company is committed to creating a safe working environment while managing clients' forests sustainably and responsibly. Their goal is to protect the long-term productivity of the land while ensuring that soil health, water quality, biodiversity, and community values are preserved and enhanced over time.

We are excited to be partnering with Manulife to recruit a Financial Controller for their New Zealand operations. This is a unique opportunity to join a global investment leader and play a key role in shaping the financial management of a diverse and growing investment platform. In this role, you will take ownership of financial accounting, statutory reporting, audits, and control functions for the New Zealand corporate entity. You'll be delivering accurate and timely financial insights to a variety of stakeholders, contributing directly to the success of an investment platform that has been expanding and evolving for more than 25 years.

As a senior member of a collaborative global finance team, you will provide oversight of the commercial and finance functions for multiple managed entities on behalf of Manulife's agricultural and timberland institutional clients. Responsibilities include:

    • Financial Controllership & Oversight – Lead financial governance and reporting for the New Zealand Corporate Entity (MFMNZ) and multiple Timber & Agriculture entities, including coordination of external audits.
    • Treasury & Capital Management – Oversee all treasury operations and capital management in New Zealand, ensuring full compliance with regulatory liquidity and capital requirements.
    • Tax & Compliance – Manage tax obligations and transfer pricing requirements across New Zealand and related entities, ensuring robust compliance and risk management.
    • Continuous Improvement – Champion productivity initiatives, process enhancements, and financial innovations that add measurable value to the business and broader organisation.
    • Financial Advisory & Analysis – Provide proactive insights and recommendations that improve operating leverage, margins, and overall profitability.
    • Financial Leadership – Drive planning, reporting, and performance analysis, with a strong focus on key business drivers that influence strategic decision-making.

To succeed in this role, you will bring a strong mix of technical expertise, commercial acumen, and leadership capability. Your background will ideally include:

    • Professional Qualifications – Full CA membership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants, or CPA qualifications.
    • Proven Experience – At least 10 years' accounting experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a comparable industry, ideally within a multi-national organisation.
    • Technical Expertise – Strong knowledge of budgeting, internal controls, general ledger management, and financial governance.
    • Taxation Knowledge – A solid understanding of New Zealand taxation requirements and compliance obligations.
    • Treasury Skills – Experience working with debt facilities, capital management, and hedge instruments.

The successful applicant will enjoy working autonomously, be a strong communicator and be happy to collaborate with a global team. This role offers the chance to combine technical expertise whilst working within an organisation committed to sustainability, innovation, and long-term growth.
