Play a key part in building and improving information/data services and processes that help us ensure New Zealanders have quality data and statistics.


  • Lead, design, and champion the provision of technical engineering practices which supports the organisation's objectives
  • Provide expert consultancy services to business and projects in a multisystem environment
  • Take a leadership role by mentoring, coaching, and peer reviewing other members in the team and the Systems Engineering & Design Guild
  • Work flexibly including familyfriendly hours
  • Permanent role working 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday

Starting salary:
$93,177 - $124,651 negotiable + superannuation

Te tūnga | The role
This role is a key part of the Processing Service Line in Technology Services at Stats NZ. We work on various systems processing our data.


Knowledge and experience you will bring to the role:

  • Strong experience in SQL Database Administration
  • Strong skills in Enterprise Infrastructure Engineering including server provisioning, support, and maintenance in a hybrid Azure environment
  • Experience in scripting e.g., Python, PowerShell, or Bash
  • Experience in automation, CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • An understanding of Cyber security
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps, Git, Docker and/or Kubernetes
  • Setting, maintaining, and improving the standards of the environment and promote adherence
  • If you have Sybase Administration skills to bring to us even better
  • Ability to work within and support a multilocated business
  • Great work commitment, tenacity, resilience, and a pragmatic approach with strong problemsolving skills
You will work collaboratively with cross-functional technical teams, helping us implement our vision.

You will also work with the wider community of System Engineers growing the effectiveness of our technology services and processes.

You will have a proven track record as a Senior System Engineer in a hybrid cloud environment, combining strong back-office systems and network operations engineering experience with solid business user support acumen.

Your passion for learning will be seen through your initiatives to learn new tools and products, keeping ahead of the latest developments, and finding ways to continuously improve current processes and standards.
