Description
About us
At Sanford, we are proud of our 100+ years of seafood history, passionate about our industry and excited about our future. Our vision is Leadership in New Zealand Seafood, achieving this through a value-led approach of care, passion, integrity and achieving together in all that we do.
About the role
We're looking for skilled Mates to join Sanford's Wildcatch scampi fleet, with immediate and upcoming opportunities on these two vessels:
These roles offer the rare chance to step into leadership on some of Sanford's most sought-after scampi vessels. Operating from Timaru and Bluff, each vessel undertakes voyages up to six weeks, fishing for scampi across the Chatham Rise, Auckland Islands, and Chatham Islands, with catch delivered to our Bluff and Timaru processing sites.
This is a fantastic opportunity whether you're an experienced Mate looking for a change in vessel or stepping into the role for the first time. With the San Tongariro recently repurposed from inshore operations to join the scampi fleet, there's fresh energy and opportunity across this group of vessels.
This is an Independent Contractor (self-employed) position on a 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off rotation. Travel to and from Timaru or Invercargill is covered by Sanford.
Responsibilities
About you
You will be a confident communicator who leads by example and supports the Skipper in running a safe, successful vessel. You'll bring professionalism, resilience, and a strong sense of accountability to everything you do, alongside a proactive approach to health, safety, and wellbeing. You'll be someone who thrives in the rhythm of life at sea and takes pride in delivering high-quality seafood to the world.

Join a close-knit, high-performing scampi fleet where your contribution matters. You'll be working aboard respected vessels like the Drysdale, Albatross II, and San Tongariro, supported by experienced Vessel Managers and a strong culture of safety and teamwork. With opportunities across multiple vessels, you can step into a role that matches your strengths and career ambitions.
Sanford offers endless opportunities, with a diverse team of over 1500 people working in various roles, including remote locations like the seas surrounding Antarctica. Join us to deliver the highest quality seafood to plates worldwide.
You must be eligible to work in New Zealand. Our recruitment process includes pre-engagement checks including criminal history check, drug and alcohol testing, and a medical assessment.
