Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility (ARWCF) is in Manukau, south of Auckland.

The operational capacity is 462 and cares for wāhine who may be on remand or sentenced and of any security classification.

There is also a purpose-built mother and babies' unit onsite.

Based on international best practice and our own research Ara Poutama Aotearoa recognises that each wahine that comes into our system is unique, with different life experiences.

Our approach will provide wahine the care, treatment, encouragement, counselling, skills and support they need to shape better futures for themselves, their tamariki and whanau.

About the role | Mō te tūnga
The role of Prison Director within ARWCF is a unique and privileged position that requires a dedicated focus on Ara Poutama Aotearoa's Women's strategy (Wahine

  • E rere ana ki te pae hou), to ensure optimal delivery of all prison related services and continuous improvement initiatives whilst balancing care, security, health, education and rehabilitation imperatives for the wāhine in our care.

With the scope and accountability to drive performance this role is responsible for the leadership of all day-to-day operational functions and the pro-active identification and management of risk across all facets of the operation to promote the safety of all those we manage.

The development of effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders is key for success, with an emphasis on teamwork and co-operation between all parties.

The journey of a wahine in our care does not stop at the prison gates so a focus on ensuring they can reach their potential on release is also a key aspect of the Director's role, in conjunction with Community Corrections leaders, iwi and other partners.

The role of Prison Director leads, at a local level, the proactive and authentic engagement with Mana Whenua and Tangata Whenua upholding values and interests as they relate to the site.

The Tanagata Whenua Committee, co-chaired by Mana Whenua representatives, is given effect through the Board of Inquiry designation - designation 53.

The Prison Director will take time to engage with Mana Whenua - Tangata Whenua of the area outside of the TWC meetings to hear first-hand the links and connections.

Having a deep understanding, appreciation for, and genuine interest in the issues wāhine we manage face is essential for success.

As a key member of the Regional Leadership Team, reporting to the Regional Commissioner, you will need to demonstrate significant experience at a senior level with exemplary relationship skills as you will be in partnership with agencies and other key stakeholders to ensure optimum results.

We would like to hear from you if you are an experienced senior leader with:

  • Proven capability at both a strategic and operational level.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship skills with an ability to influence outcomes
  • Indepth knowledge of and experience in rehabilitation & reintegration best practice
  • A focus on lifting cultural capability, driving innovation & continuous improvement initiatives
  • An indepth understanding of the factors impacting on rehabilitation & reintegration for people who have committed offences.
  • The commitment to develop a strong leadership team dedicated to achieving outcomes & displaying our core values
  • A high level of understanding and anticipation of political and reputational risk
  • An indepth knowledge of risk management processes and compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively within Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Hurihuri and display core skills (Te Reo, Tikanga, and an understanding of the Tiriti o Waitangi)
Along with the above a genuine interest for leading a site that is focussed on achieving objectives and outcomes for wāhine, you must have a thorough working knowledge and understanding of Wahine

Utu ā-tau | Salary
The midpoint of the salary range is $$178,375 and the full range (85%-120%) is $151,619 - $214,050. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
