  • Fastpaced role providing ongoing astute regional support and guidance with a varied and dynamic mix of office and sitebased work_
Transpower has a dual role as New Zealand's owner and system operator of the National Grid.

As the transmission network asset owner, we keep the energy flowing - transporting high voltage electricity from where it is generated to cities, towns, and some major industrial users nationwide.

Our transmission network includes over 12,000 km of transmission lines, 25,000 transmission towers and 170 substations. As System Operator, we operate the electricity market and power system 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We currently employ over 900 people nationwide and are growing, with an extended Service Providers whānau of over 1,000 who are responsible for the delivery of construction, maintenance, and fault response on the National Grid.

With accelerating demand for electrification to meet climate change goals, our business will continue to scale at pace, with the health, safety and wellbeing of our people remaining a top priority.

Our people care, and our safety performance is strong.

About the team

The Health and Safety team are responsible for supporting Transpower's Leadership Team, Line Managers, and employees in the delivery of health and safety performance across the organisation.

The team leads the ongoing development of robust and effective Health and Safety strategies, systems, and programmes which generate positive Health and Safety outcomes resulting in healthy and safe workplaces for our employees, our service providers and the public who encounter our work and assets.

About the opportunity

Our people rate their satisfaction with health and safety highest in our engagement survey because it matters to us all, and we care.

The scale, criticality, and complexity of our state-owned, enterprise is both stimulating and intellectually challenging.

As one of four Health and Safety Practitioners (and a broader centralised but geographically diverse safety team of nine) you'll engage with a broad range of people including our executives, and have great on the job learning, whilst you provide ongoing regional support and guidance for Transpower employees, Service Providers and Contractors.

You'll enjoy seeing parts of Aotearoa many don't, and a mix of both office based and site-based work (usually 3-4 days a week), often within high-risk electrical environments such as working within substations and in proximity to electrical transmission lines.

A current NZ drivers' licence is required as a car is available for business use.

What will you bring?

You'll have a tertiary qualification in Health and Safety and membership of a relevant industry professional organisation (New Zealand Safety Council / NZISM).

Performance orientated with succinct communication skills and depth of experience in health and safety that includes synthesising data and metrics for insights, you'll be passionate about improving safety and providing safety assurance.

Highly organised with excellent verbal and written communication skills you'll be able to tailor your style to the audience and engage and influence at all levels of the organisation from the field to the executive leadership team.

To be considered, your career to date, cover letter, and resume will demonstrate:

  • Strong understanding of current New Zealand Health and Safety legislation and experience of driving positive outcomes in a medium to large multi-dimensional organisation
  • Practical understanding and experience delivering positive outcomes in highrisk working environments.
  • Experience of working with large contracting organisations and resource outsourcing operating models.
  • Leading and supporting incident investigations using a recognised methodology e.g., ICAM.
  • Undertaking health and safety assessments and/or inspections in both office and field environments.
  • Producing accurate and highquality reports including the identification of trends and provision of insights (and subsequently resulting actions).
While not essential - please do tell us if you have lead investigator in a recognised investigation methodology e.g. ICAM or TapRoot and/or lead auditor qualification. Level 6 Tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety
