    Default job background
    Description

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks an enterprising reporter with a proven track record of developing sources and breaking stories. Based in Wellington or Auckland, this reporter will be responsible for coverage of New Zealand and the South Pacific and would help with Australia and wider Asia-Pacific coverage.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the News Director for the Koreas, Japan and Australia/South Pacific, this reporter will work closely with AP colleagues throughout the region, aiming to consistently break news and produce distinct, deeply reported enterprise about a broad range of topics. This includes primary responsibility for coverage of New Zealand and Pacific Island nations, as well as supporting coverage of Australia. You will also be a key member of the wider Asia-Pacific regional reporting team, strengthening AP's reporting efforts throughout the region and beyond. In this role, you will primarily be a text reporter but will also be comfortable working in multiple media formats, with the ability to shoot video and photos, and verify and acquire UGC. The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

We're looking for a candidate who has:

    • impeccable judgment, a commitment to accuracy and competitive drive to push AP and its journalists to deliver exclusive stories and swift coverage of breaking news.
    • a demonstrated history of successful reporting, with a record of producing compelling work that is diverse, inclusive, and innovative, while maintaining AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.
    • strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively and successfully with a team of journalists who operate in all formats – text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics – communicating stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.
    • a broad and deep understanding of current issues in New Zealand, Australia, and the Asia-Pacific region, with the ability to translate that knowledge into compelling and distinctive stories.

Preferred Qualifications: You must have demonstrated excellence as a journalist covering a complex and challenging beat, with a deep record of delivering exclusive, enlightening, and distinctive stories. You must be able to consistently break news and report enterprise that offers readers and viewers an illuminating looks at New Zealand and the wider region. Applicants must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers in teams and should have at least three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
    • Authorization to work in New Zealand will be mandatory.
    • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Competency in another regional language is a plus.
    • Basic proficiency in using an iPhone for photos and video is required. Advanced proficiency is a plus.
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Application deadline is 11:59pm EST on April 18, 2024
