The Whakapiki Ake Project(WPA) is a Māori recruitment pipeline that actively engages with rangatahi and whanau, from Year Supporting their journey through secondary school and those who continue into a health-related, tertiary study program in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences(FMHS) at the University of Auckland.

Engagement and collaboration with schools, community groups, internal FMHS, University of Auckland and external organisations are fundamental to the success of WPA as is the practice of kaupapa Māori.


We are seeking a passionate and inspirational individual who wants to contribute to the success of WPA and support rangatahi Māori on their cultural and educational journey.

Working with whānau and others is integral to this role, as is a high level of energy, be highly self-motivated and committed to supporting the ongoing practice of kaupapa Māori.

You will need to learn and train on the job, be able to take direction. work with minimum supervision, use initiative, and work independently in a fast
- paced environment.

To be considered for the role you will require these essential skills:

  • Tertiary qualification from a New Zealand university or Whare Wananga
- a full and clean driver's licence

  • 12 years of experience in working with Māori tauira/whānau/hapori/communities
  • Strong level of oral and written communication, interpersonal, negotiation, analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Capacity to develop organisational, planning and project management skills
  • Event planning and coordination
  • Power point presentation development & public speaking
  • A level of te reo me ōna tikanga that enables you to be comfortable in Kura Kaupapa, Whare Kura and marae environments.
  • Confidence to participate and lead in noho marae/wānanga

Te Kupenga Hauora Māori (TKHM) is located at the Grafton Campus.

TKHM represents the Department of Māori Health and is responsible for the coordination of Māori health teaching across the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, the Vision 20:20 initiative responsible for Indigenous health workforce development and the Tōmaiora Research Unit is responsible for conducting Kaupapa Māori health research and training services.
