About Mark Frater:

I am an IT and communications executive with extensive experience the deployment and operation of Internet service provider networks, cloud services and IT systems.

I have a proven track record of managing technical teams to deliver complex broadband networks, Internet services, server farms, storage clusters and data centre installations. This covers all aspects from business case, tendering, supply contracts, design, deployment and operation.

I am a strategic thinker with technical competence, commercial nous and knowledge of regulatory frameworks needed to deliver service-oriented solutions that meet customer expectations and business outcomes.

I have a hands-on approach to my work with a servant leadership management style to promote competence, autonomy and initiative in my staff.


 

Experience

Chief Technologist - Compass Communications Ltd (2016–2025)

• Led the design, planning, deployment and operation of networks, private clouds and IT systems to support Compass products and services, delivering maximum financial performance and customer focussed solutions.

• Built and maintained strong relationships with enterprise customers, wholesale partners, local fibre companies and regulatory stakeholders.

GM Networks, Compass Communications Ltd (2007-2016)

• Rolled out nationwide DSL/Voice networks, fibre infrastructure, and WiMAX wireless networks.

• Oversaw multiple concurrent projects, from business case through to deployment.

• Negotiated supplier contracts and improved margins through project cost control.

• Delivered infrastructure upgrades for customer-focused outcomes across office and field environments. 
 

Director and CTO - Mercury Telecommunications Limited / Quicksilver Internet (1999-2006)

• Managed network infrastructure and project delivery for ISP services across 10,000+ customers. Achieved Deloitte Fast 50 recognition and significant shareholder return.

• Negotiation of Sale and Purchase agreement and handover of business operations to Woosh Wireless.
